St. Peter’s first Mass planned for Blessing
PROVINCETOWN — The new St. Peter’s Church, rebuilt after a devastating fire in January 2005, will celebrate its first Mass on June 29 with the Blessing of the Fleet.
The annual Mass honoring the town’s fishing history, which follows the traditional Blessing of the Fleet as it parades past MacMillan Pier, has been celebrated at Fisherman’s Wharf since the fire. With the new church almost finished, Father Henry Dahl, St. Peter’s pastor, said the ceremony would move back to St. Peter’s
“The very first Mass in the new church will be the Blessing of the Fleet Fisherman’s Mass on Sunday, June 29. The first Mass in St. Peter’s will be special for all of us and a fitting event in Provincetown’s history,” Dahl said.
The Blessing of the Fleet takes place during the Portuguese Festival, which will begin on Thursday, June 26, with an opening night dinner, and end on Sunday after the Fisherman’s Mass and a full day of music, food and entertainment. This year the festival will reinstate the award recognizing the best decorated fishing boats, according to festival coordinator Don Murphy. —PS
