Albert Phillip Rego, 81
WW II veteran worked for Water Dept. BANNER STAFF
Albert Phillip Rego, 81, a lifelong Provincetown resident, died at Cape Cod Hospital on Aug. 3. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Frances.
Mr. Rego was born in Provincetown on July 22, 1919 to Manuel D. and Mary (Roderick) Rego. He grew up in Provincetown and graduated from Provincetown High School in 1937. He trap-fished with his father aboard the F/V Harbor Bar. He served as chief radioman in the Navy during WW II in the Pacific Theater and was involved in the battle of Tarawa.
In 1940 he married Frances Avellar. After the war he worked for the Provincetown Water Dept. at the pumping station until he retired in the late 1980s.
Mr. Rego was a member of the Provincetown Striper Club and once caught 36 stripers in one day, finally quitting only because he was tired. He loved watching sunsets on the beach and was active with the children in his wife's pre-school classes. Mr. Rego was also a member of the VFW Lewis A. Young Post #3152 and the K of C Walter Welsh Council #2476.
He is survived by his sister, Agnes Tasha, of Provincetown, many nieces and nephews and godson Stephen Wells Goveia of Mashpee. His wife, Frances, died in 1995.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 17 at the family lot in Provincetown Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Memorial donations may be sent to the Residents Fund, Cape End Manor, 100 Alden St., Provincetown, MA 02657.
