Louis Sacks, 83
Veteran, former Provincetown businessman BANNER STAFF
Louis Sacks, 83, a retired educator from Marblehead and former owner of a Provincetown hat shop, died on Aug. 10 of complications of Parkinson's disease.
He was the husband of Frances (Cohen) Sacks.
Mr. Sacks was born in Revere and graduated from Revere High School and Colby College in Maine. He received a Master's in Education from Boston University. He taught and was assistant principal at the Garfield Junior High School in Revere. He taught for 33 years, retiring in 1981. From 1948 through '80 he also ran a summer business, 'The Hat Box,' and became known around town as Eddie the Hat Man. His store was located next to Alex the fruitman and then in the old bowling alley building.
Mr. Sacks served as a captain in the Army during WW II from 1941-'46 and was among the first troops at the liberation of Berlin. He served under Gen. Eisenhower as part of the post-war government in Germany.
He was involved in many educational organizations and was active in B'nai B'rith and the Auxiliary of the Jewish Rehabilitation Center for Aged in Swampscott. He served as secretary of the Board of Directors of Temple Israel in Swampscott and chairman of the Temple Israel Religious School.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Steven Sacks of Los Angeles and Kenneth Sacks and his wife Maria of New York and Provincetown; a brother, Frank and his wife Betty Sacks of Calif.; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Dorothy Rothenberg.
Services were held Monday in Temple Israel in Swampscott with burial in the Temple Israel Cemetery in Peabody. A memorial service will be held in Provincetown on a date to be announced later.
