John A. Surprenant, 73
Former manager at Poor Richard’s, gallery owner
John A. “Jacques” Surprenant, 73, of Provincetown died Monday, July 26, at the Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis after a long illness.
Mr. Surprenant was born in Indian Orchard, Mass. He lived in Provincetown for many years where he managed Poor Richard’s Landing and owned and operated the Renaissance III Art Gallery on Commercial Street. Previously, he was a member of the Trappist community and Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Monastery in Conyers, Ga.
Jacques was an eccentric, intellectual and creative person. He was warm, witty and extremely generous. He will be missed by his many friends and family.
Surviving are his sisters, Joan Kiesznowski of Spring Hill, Fla. and Jill Marcus of Branford, Conn. and a brother, Alfred Surprenant of Danbury, Conn. His much-loved dog, Wally, predeceased him.
A memorial service is planned at a date and time to be announced.
