William E. Hoontis, 54

Former social worker

William Eli Hoontis, a former 30-year Provincetown resident and social worker with Elder Services of Cape Cod, died Oct. 9 in Derry, N.H. of a massive heart attack. He was 54.

Mr. Hoontis was born in Springfield and educated at U-Mass Amherst and Springfield College, where he received degrees in psychology and social work. He moved to Provincetown in 1975 and worked as a social worker for Elder Services of Cape Cod. He and Laura Macaby ran a playgroup for children in Provincetown.

Many remember Mr. Hoontis as “Bill” of “Bill and Cliff,” who operated the Cheese Market from 1978 to 1986. For 11 years the pair ran Clifford-William Antiques at 225 Commercial St., Provincetown. He later moved to Derry, N.H.

He leaves his friend, lover and partner Cliff Cowgill of Derry, N.H.; his mother, Murial Hoontis; his brother Peter Hoontis; a nephew and two nieces.
