OBITUARIES

12/16/04 Obit Garcia

Rafael A. Garcia-Sosa
Rafael A. Garcia-Sosa, 44

Long-time resident was chef, artist, writer

Rafael A. Garcia-Sosa, 44, of Provincetown died in his home Saturday, Dec. 4, after an illness.

Mr. Garcia-Sosa was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He has been living in the U.S. for about 25 years, most of those in Provincetown.

He was a chef by trade. In 1993, he received a BA in psychology from Metropolitan College in Boston. He also was a talented artist. He loved reading and he was a gifted writer, who was often seen with his head buried in a journal, writing down something that he just heard and wanted to remember. He was an animal lover, food and wine connoisseur, and a deeply spiritual and wonderful human being, who greatly appreciated the natural beauty of music and movement, the outdoors, the Lucille Ball show, yoga, and meditation. Most of all, Rafael loved and valued the relationships with his friends and family members.

He started his local career as a cook at the Seaview Restaurant (now Bubala’s), then moved in 1995 to The Mews Restaurant, where he became sous chef. Taking a leave of absence, he was accepted as apprentice chef at the five-star French Laundry Restaurant in the Napa Region of California. In 2003 he returned east and accepted positions cooking at Milano's Kitchen Restaurant and Sonsei Restaurant, both in Boston. He returned to Provincetown this year and became the chef for Cosmos Catering of Provincetown.

Surviving are four brothers, two sisters, and several nieces and nephews in Venezuela, and many caring friends, especially his caregiver David Perlini.
A memorial celebration will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 17, at the Mews Restaurant, 429 Commercial St, Provincetown. Friends are invited to attend.
Funeral services and burial will be in Venezuela.

Memorial donations may be sent to ASGCC, P.O. Box 1522, Provincetown, MA 02657 or Hospice and Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 270 Communications Way, Hyannis, MA 02601.
