John S. ‘Jack’ Edwards, 89
Founding member of rescue squad
John S. 'Jack' Edwards, 89, of Provincetown died June 1 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. His wife of 54 years, Antoinella I. (Scoppettuolo) Edwards, died in 1998.
Born in Provincetown, Mr. Edwards graduated from Provincetown High School. Prior to military service, he worked in his father’s business, the Chef’s Lunch, now the Governor Bradford Restaurant. Once he returned from overseas, he was an automotive mechanic at the former Duarte Motors in Provincetown for 28 years, and after retirement, a handyman and carpenter.
A WW II Army Air Force veteran, he served in England and fought in the North African and Italian campaigns.
Mr. Edwards was a founding member of the Provincetown Rescue Squad and a member of Provincetown Fire Dept.'s Engine 3 for many years. He was also a member of the Lewis A. Young Post no. 3125, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the 27th Fighter Squadron Association.
He played the tuba and string bass with the Lower Cape Concert Band. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking — especially making wooden toys — and reading westerns.
He is survived by three daughters, Georgianna McBride of Slidell, La., Eleanora Edwards of Minnesota, and Lisa Edwards of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sons, John Edwards of Braintree, Vt., Michael Edwards of Nanuet, N.Y., and Thomas Edwards of Provincetown: a brother, Donald Edwards of Provincetown; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral, with full military honors, was Tuesday, June 7, from the McHoul Funeral Home, Harry Kemp Way and Howland Street, Provincetown. A Funeral Mass followed at St. Peter the Apostle Church, Prince Street, Provincetown. Burial was in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
