David A. McHoul
David A. McHoul, 63

Provincetown funeral director

David A. McHoul, 63, Provincetown's funeral director since 1985, died at the Cape End Manor in Provincetown on June 6 of complications from Lyme disease.

Mr. McHoul was born in Boston, the oldest of three sons of Alexander and Mildred (Hennessey) McHoul. He was educated at Watkinson Preparatory School in Hartford, Conn., and the New England Institute. He served in the USMC during the Vietnam era. From 1962-1983 he and his brother Doug ran McHoul Services, which provided embalming services, as well as limousine and hearse services. He moved to Provincetown in 1984 and opened McHoul Funeral Home in 1985.

Mr. McHoul loved his life in Provincetown. His sense of humor and kindness flourished here. He enjoyed coffee with "the boys" at Adams Pharmacy every morning, riding his bike around town, going out to the point in the Digger I and later the No Wake. And there was Dune, the dalmatian, by his side for 14 years. He loved to eat out in Provincetown’s fine, friendly restaurants. And he got a lot of traveling in between 1990 and 2000.

He was a member of the Lions Club of Provincetown, King Hiram’s Lodge and the Walter Welsh Knights of Columbus.

Mr. McHoul is survived by his girlfriend, Sandy Dobbyn of Provincetown; daughter Kelly Doyle and her husband, Paul, of Plymouth; daughter Kary Gatens and her husband, Terry, of Los Angeles, Calif.; his parents Alexander and Mildred McHoul of Dorchester; two brothers, Douglas of New York and Provincetown and Donald of North Attleboro. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Eamonn and Niamh Doyle of Plymouth and Cooper Gatens of Los Angeles. And he is already missed by his faithful Wheaten terrier, Wheeti.

He was grateful for all the kindnesses of his many friends in Provincetown, especially Ozzie Rose and Jim Keefe.

The funeral will commence at McHoul Funeral Home, Provincetown, at 9:30 a.m. on Friday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Peter the Apostle Church; the Rev. Henry Dahl will officiate. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with vigil prayer at 7:30. Burial in St. Peter's Cemetery will follow.

Donations in Mr. McHoul’s memory may be made to the Residents' Fund, Cape End Manor, 100 Alden St., Provincetown, MA 02657, or to the Provincetown Rescue Squad, Box 109, Provincetown.
