Thomas J. Merritt
Art director & consultant, U.S. Army veteran
Thomas J. Merritt, 67, of North Truro died Thursday at Cape Cod Hospital after being taken ill at his home.
Mr. Merritt was born in Revere. He graduated from South Boston High School. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Columbia University in New York City and a bachelor of fine arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
He was director of the graphics division for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for more than 20 years. He personally designed the campaign for the World Trade Center and the twin towers. After moving back to Boston, he was named art director for the mayor’s office by former Mayor Raymond Flynn. He was also an art consultant to the Boston Redevelopment Authority. He was a Korean War era U.S. Army veteran.
He spent summers in North Truro since 1979, he moved to the Cape full-time in 1996. He was a member of the Truro Council on Aging and served on the town Finance Committee.
He attended St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in North Truro. He enjoyed gardening and was an accomplished artist, specializing in portraits and seascapes.
He is survived by his partner of 36 years, Paul J. Donahue; two sisters, Patricia McCoy of Plymouth and Mary Jane Leary of Taunton; a brother, Robert J. Merritt of Martha's Vineyard; many nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held June 14 from the McHoul Funeral Home, Harry Kemp Way and Howland Street, Provincetown. A Funeral Mass followed in St. Peter the Apostle Church Hall, Prince Street, Provincetown. He was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Quincy.
