Esther C. Levin, 84
Former social worker, newspaper owner
Esther C. Levin, 84, of Wellfleet died on July 18 at the Epoch Senior Healthcare of Brewster. She was the wife of Zel Levin, a former city editor of The Woonsocket Call and book reviewer for the Provincetown Banner.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Morris and Mary (Steinberg) Cutler. She was a 1941 graduate of Boston University receiving a degree in journalism. She was later a 1968 graduate of Smith College in Northampton, receiving a master’s degree in social work.
Mrs. Levin was a reporter and an assistant editor of the women’s page of the The Call for many years. In the 1950s, she operated and co-founded, along with her husband, the Sunday Star, a weekly newspaper in Woonsocket for five years.
She was later a clinical social worker for Butler Hospital in Providence for 18 years, retiring in 1986 with her husband to Wellfleet.
Mrs. Levin was a lifelong Democrat and active in a variety of cultural, political and community affairs, including being the co-leader of a stroke recovery group for seniors in Wellfleet for many years up until her illness. She was an ardent animal lover and adored her two Siamese cats, Angus and Samantha.
She is survived by her husband, Zel; two daughters, Elise Freedman and Jessie Birckhead of Bethlehem, Penn.; two granddaughters; and her sister, Gertrude Cutler of New York City.
