Margaret M. Meaney, 84

Devoted to public service, librarian, teacher, volunteer

Margaret M. Meaney, 84, of Wellfleet died June 23 at her home.
She was born in Springfield, Mass., on Nov. 28, 1920. Her mother, Mary A. Brown, was a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, and her father, Thomas F. Meaney, was from New Haven, Conn.

Ms. Meaney graduated from Westfield State College in 1942. She led a life of public service spanning more than 60 years. She was a teacher and a librarian in the West Harford, Conn. public schools from 1943 through 1977. During her 35-year career she earned two master’s degrees, one in education and one in library science from the University of Hartford and Westfield State College.

She first visited Wellfleet in 1951 and bought her home there in 1954. She became a full-time resident upon her retirement in 1977. Before retiring to Wellfleet, she lived in Suffield, Conn. For more than 22 years before that, and for a short period in the 1980s, she lived in Agawam.

She served on the Wellfleet Library Building Committee and was a volunteer at the Wellfleet Public Library. Ms. Meaney was a member of the Wellfleet Congregational Church and served at its financial secretary. She devoted much of her time to animal rescue efforts and was an active member of The Sampson Fund for Veterinary Care, serving as the fund’s corresponding secretary and working on its finance committee.

She served as a member of the steering committee for the Wellfleet Committee for the Barnstable County Tercentenary. She was member of the Wellfleet Historical Society, a volunteer at the library at Cape Cod National Seashore, served Meals-On-Wheels and was an active member of the Wellfleet Council on Aging. She was a graduate of the Wellfleet Citizens Police Academy.

As a young woman, she was a skiing and sailing enthusiast. She studied and appreciated the culture of Scotland.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, John Maxim Morin of Agawam; one niece, several nephews and four grand-nieces. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Mary A. “Mickey” Morin.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at First Congregational Church, 200 Main St., Wellfleet. Memorial donations may be made to the Wellfleet Council on Aging, the Wellfleet Congregational Church, the Wellfleet Library Trust Fund, the Wellfleet Police Relief Association, the Wellfleet Firemen’s Association, or The Sampson Fund for Veterinary Care Inc., P.O.
