James A. Bayard, 83
Guesthouse owner was WW II vet & retired advertising executive
James A. Bayard, 83, former owner of Asheton House, a guesthouse in Provincetown, died Aug. 7.
He and his late companion, Les Schaufler, opened Asheton House in 1977 and ran it together until Schaufler died in 1985. Bayard continued running the guesthouse through 1997, at which time he retired and turned the guesthouse into his private residence.
Born in Waterbury, Conn., Bayard graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., in 1943 after which he served as a Naval officer during WW II.
After the war he worked for Young & Rubicam Advertising Agency in New York City, then as an advertising manager at Scovill Manufacturing Co. in Waterbury, and later as a vice-president and account executive at the Edward W. Robotham Advertising Agency in Westport, Conn.
From 1966 to 1977 he and Schaufler lived in Newtown, Conn., where they restored a 1720 farmhouse which became well known in the area for its architectural integrity and beauty.
While living in Connecticut, Bayard participated in a number of theatrical productions and served on the board of directors of the Civic Theater of Waterbury for over 20 years. He served as a member of the Provincetown Zoning Board of Appeals for eight years during the 1980s and was a member of the board of directors of the Provincetown Chamber of Commerce during the 1980s and 1990s.
Bayard made a gift of his body to Harvard Medical School. He is survived by three nephews, two great nephews and two great nieces.
