Mary M. Grozier, 72
Poet & patron of the arts
Mary Margaret Grozier, 72, of New Jersey, formerly of Cambridge and Provincetown, died on Aug. 10. She leaves her long devoted partner, Elaine Lotchpeich of New Jersey.
Ms. Grozier was the daughter of the late Richard and Peggy Murphy Grozier. She was raised in Cambridge but spent summers in Provincetown. She moved to New York City in the 1960s. Ms. Grozier was a published poet and worked at Consolidated Edison in New York in public relations.
She was a lifetime patron of the arts and contributed generously to music and dance organizations. A world traveler, she was an early visitor to Beirut and other Middle Eastern countries, and was a frequent visitor to Ireland. She was intensely loyal to her family and friends, always ready to work with them in all stages of their lives. She is deeply missed by each of them.
Ms. Grozier came from a noteworthy family. Her grandfather Edwin Atkins Grozier was born and raised in Provincetown, went to Harvard and became Joseph Pulitzer’s secretary. He was a publisher of the Boston Post and an organizer of the group that got together to build the Provincetown Monument. He was the principal in obtaining federal funds for the Bas Relief across from Town Hall and in organizing the Provincetown Helping Hand Society (a fund for widowers of Provincetown seamen lost at sea). He also established the Boston Post Cane, initially given to the oldest citizen of Provincetown and then in each town across the state. Her father, Richard, exposed Charles Ponzi’s scheme in the 1920s and received the Pulitzer Prize. Later, he became publisher of the Post.
Ms. Grozier spent every summer with her family at their home at 160 Commercial St., across from what is now the Boatslip, until it was sold to Reggie Cabral in 1963. She visited Provincetown often, most recently in 2003 when there was a reunion with her brother David’s sons and their families, including a dinner with their longtime friends, Mary Avellar and her two daughters, Susan and Mary-Jo.
In addition to her longtime partner Elaine Lotchpeich, she is survived by her sisters-in-law Elizabeth Grozier and Estill Buchanan; 12 nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and nephews; and a goddaughter, Sarah Higgins of New York. She was very close to her cousin the Rev. Francis Regan. She was pre-deceased by her brothers, Richard Jr., David and John.
A memorial mass at St. Christina’s Church in Marshfield will be held at a later date in October. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Susan B. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.
