Gladys L. Morehouse, 85
Former Wellfleet resident was known for homemade jams
Gladys L. Morehouse, 85, of Scotia, N.Y., formerly of Wellfleet, died Aug. 16 at the Glendale Nursing Facility in Scotia after 10 years of living with Alzheimer’s disease.
Mrs. Morehouse was born in a farmhouse in Sherman, N.Y., on May 21, 1920, the third of five children born to Alice (Smith) and Floyd Vrooman. Her mother died in 1935 after the long illness. Mrs. Morehouse was an excellent student and athlete, graduating near the top of the Sherman High School class of 1938.
She married Don Morehouse on Jan. 1, 1941, and they had six children. Although she considered herself primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Morehouse worked hard to help support her family. She was an accomplished seamstress and reupholsterer. She raised chickens, rabbits and ducks. And, for the 10 years preceding her husband’s death in 1972, was the proprietress of a chrysanthemum nursery in Athens, N.Y.
In 1973 she moved to Erie, Penn., to the home of her sister Verna. While there she became a certified home health aide and embarked on a new career, in which she excelled. During this time she added skilled weaving to her list of accomplishments.
In 1980 she moved to South Wellfleet to be near her sons Alan and Bill. She became a private cook and companion for two elderly sisters, as well as a caretaker for a small resort located within the Cape Cod National Seashore. She was active in the Wellfleet Congregational Church and gained renown for her weaving, stuffed animals, homemade wild blueberry jam and beach plum jelly, as well as her empathetic ear and the miracle of her always full cookie jar.
In 1999 she retired and purchased a home in Scotia to be near her daughter Shirley. In 2004 she moved into the health care facility Clare Bridge in Niskayuna, and from there to the Glendale Nursing Home.
Mrs. Morehouse is survived by her son Daniel and his wife, Jan, of Torrance, Calif.; son Alan and his wife, Deirdre, of South Wellfleet; son Boyd and his wife, Roberta, of Chandler, Ariz.; daughter Barbe Herrick and her husband, Jim, of Chico, Calif.; daughter Shirley Curtis and her husband, Dick, of Scotia; sister Verna and her husband, Ed Fickenscher, of Erie; a brother, Truman Vrooman of North Clymer, N.Y.; and eight cherished grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1972, her son William in 1990 and her brothers Richard and Ivan.
Memorial services will be held in Athens, N.Y., and Sherman, N.Y. in September. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association or Hospice of Schenectady County.
