Dorothy Bradley, 91
Worked for the Center for Coastal Studies gift shop
Dorothy “Dorie” Bradley, a 12-year resident of Provincetown, died Nov. 14 at the Cape End Manor in Provincetown. She was 91.
Born in Chicago, Ill., Dorie met Dick, her husband-to-be, on a blind date. One year later they packed their daughter, their dog and their clothes into a yellow jeep and drove to southern California. Dorie was a buyer for a clothing store in La Jolla, Calif., for several years, and then later assisted her husband with his one-man advertising agency in San Diego. She spent a year as part of the crew on their sailboat Cheerio, winner in the ocean racing class of the 1962 Newport to Ensenada sailboat race.
After their children were grown, they sold their house and moved onto the Hunky Dory, a 50-foot trawler. They traveled up the Inland Waterway to Newport, R.I., for a summer and eventually ended up in Marathon Key, Fla., until Dick’s death in 1983. Dorie sold the trawler and bought a small houseboat where she lived with her cat Patsy until Hurricane Andrew convinced her to move back onshore. She made the move to Provincetown in 1993.
Dorie was a familiar sight in town, with her distinctive baseball cap and sunglasses and her determined stride. She started working for the Center for Coastal Studies gift shop in 1995 and worked there every summer for the next nine years. She spent her days off walking on the beach, enjoying the parade of people from the bench in front of Town Hall and watching the whales aboard the Dolphin Fleet boats. She loved the sea, her family, her friends and her town.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Bradley and Linda Rullo, both of Wellfleet, and her granddaughter Chelsea Rullo of Carmel, Calif.
A memorial service is planned in the spring.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cape End Manor Residents’ Fund, 100 Alden St, Provincetown MA 02657, or to Outer Cape Health Services, 49 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown MA 02657.
