OBITUARIES

Jacob ‘Jake’ E. Bruinooge, 70

One of the original Wellfleet shellfish farmers

Jacob E. "Jake" Bruinooge, 70, of Wellfleet, died on Feb. 7 at Cape Cod Hospital after a long illness. He was the husband of Berta (Diebold) Bruinooge for 45 years.

Mr. Bruinooge was born in Lodi, N.J., and graduated from Eastern Academy in Prospect Park, N.J., class of 1953, where he was an outstanding athlete. He was a swimming instructor at the Passaic, N.J., YMCA for several years. He was a Lodi volunteer fireman and a New Jersey exempt fireman and was employed by Asplundh Tree Expert Company. He served in the Army from 1958 to 1960.

In 1963 he moved to Park Ridge, N.J., where he established Bruinooge Tree Service, Inc. He was a certified tree expert, a past president of the Arborists Association of New Jersey, and was named New Jersey’s Arborist of the Year in 1968.

In 1976 he and his family moved to Wellfleet, where they had vacationed for many years. He was employed by Countryside Landscaping in Chatham, and in 1980 became the golf course superintendent at the Chequessett Yacht and Country Club in Wellfleet, a position he held until his retirement in 2000. He was a commercial lobsterman for many years and a Wellfleet shellfish grant holder beginning in 1977, raising quahogs and oysters.

“That’s why Wellfleet is a large shellfish community right now, because he was one of the guys who help to start it,” said local aquaculturalist Michael Parlante. “He was a great guy and we started pretty much raising the shellfish together, and we practiced and learned from each other. He was one of the first doing aquaculture. … He was always very helpful.”

Mr. Bruinooge was also an avid fly fisherman and a talented artist, carving and painting wooden birds, fish and duck decoys. He served on the Wellfleet Conservation Commission for 14 years.

Before his illness, he was a volunteer with the Chaplain's Office at Cape Cod Hospital. He was a life member of the Golf Course Managers Association of Cape Cod, a member of the Eastham United Methodist Church, the Massachusetts Lobstermen's Association, Ducks Unlimited and the Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce.

Besides his wife, survivors include son Evan Bruinooge of Wellfleet, son Eric Bruinooge, daughter-in-law Jennifer Bruinooge and grandson Nicholas Bruinooge of Chatham; a sister, Carol Bruinooge of Lodi, N.J.; a brother, James Bruinooge of Wellfleet; a niece, two nephews, several cousins and many friends. Visitation was held last Friday at Nickerson Funeral Home in Wellfleet and a funeral service was held last Saturday at the Eastham United Methodist Church.

Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Bruinooge’s name to the Eastham United Methodist Church or to the Wellfleet Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund, Box 571, Wellfleet, MA 02667.
