John E. Dunham, 74
Former professional tennis pro
John E. Dunham, 74, of Provincetown, died in his home on Saturday.
Born in Lexington, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Alice (Floyd) Dunham. An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he graduated from the University of Maryland and then worked in sales. His true love, however, was tennis, and he left sales after 10 years to play professionally. He was one of the top five rated tennis players in New England for many years and was a member of the U.S. Professional Teaching Association.
In the 1970s Mr. Dunham moved to Provincetown to help his mother run the Dunham House, an inn located inside a house that has been in the family for a century. After his mother’s death he continued to run the inn until his retirement. He was also a tennis instructor at several clubs on the Cape and taught privately. During the off-season, he gave tennis lessons in Florida.
He loved playing chess with friends in Provincetown, as well as spending time on the beach, both here and in Florida.
He is survived by two sons, Glen Dunham of Woodbury, Conn., and Ronald Dunham of Berlin, Conn., as well as four grandchildren.
Calling hours were to be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the McHoul Funeral Home, Howland St. and Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown. Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, at Provincetown United Methodist Church, Shank Painter Road, Provincetown. Burial will follow in Provincetown Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 720 Main Street, Hyannis, MA 02601.
