Edward McGuinness, 73

High school principal & air force veteran

Edward J. McGuinness, 73, of Naples, Fla. and Fall River died Feb. 13 in Naples. He was the husband of the late Maureen A. (Kelly) McGuinness.

Born in Cambridge to the late Edward McGuinness and the late Lida (Ballard) McGuinness, Mr. McGuinness was a graduate of Durfee High School and received his bachelor and master’s degrees from Bridgewater State College.

He was an Air Force veteran who saw service in Greenland.

He was a longtime member of the Fall River School Dept., teaching at Henry Lord Junior High School and later being named principal of the NB Borden School, retiring in 1998 as principal of Highland Elementary School. He also volunteered at Ruthie’s Consignment Shop in Provincetown.

He was a member of the Fall River Lodge of Elks #118, Fraternal order of Eagles, Naples Tennis Association, Provincetown Tennis Association and the Mass., National and Bristol County Retired Teachers associations.

Mr. McGuinness is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Plasski of Fall River; four sons, Brian J. McGuinness of Greenwich, Conn., Edward J. McGuinness Jr. of Fall River, James E. McGuinness of Wallingford, Conn., and Timothy J. McGuinness of Fall River; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Jeffrey M. and Paul M. McGuinness.

A funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26, from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover St., Fall River. Burial will be private.
