Sampan Wootirat, 61
Retired educator enjoyed gardening & travel
Sampan Wootirat, 61, of Truro, formerly of Boston, died Saturday, Feb. 11, at EPOCH Senior Healthcare in Harwich after a 19-month struggle with lung cancer.
Born in Nan, Thailand, he came to this country to attend Hastings College in Nebraska. At Hastings, he earned both a BS and MS in biology.
Visiting Boston in 1971, he decided to stay. He earned an M.Ed. at Boston State College while working toward his teaching certification. In 1978 he earned his Ph.D. from Boston College.
Dr. Wootirat retired from the Boston Public Schools in 2002 after a 20-plus-year teaching career. He taught at Boston English High School for 10 years and then at Madison Park High School. He was a biology and chemistry teacher.
Sampan moved to the Cape permanently upon his retirement. He had spent at least part of the last 35 summers on the Outer Cape.
Sampan loved to travel and was a world traveler. He enjoyed gardening and his Boston and Truro flower gardens were the envy of his neighbors. He particularly loved to entertain family and friends in his Truro and Boston homes.
He is survived by his partner of 35 years, Joseph Duch of Truro; his devoted sister, Pun-Ngarm Wootirat of Bloomfield, N.J.; his parents, Porn and Sudsguan Wootirat of Nan, Thailand; a sister, Kanit Pattamachit, two nieces and a nephew in Bangkok, Thailand; a brother, Nopporn Wootirat of Chang Mai, Thailand and many friends.
A memorial service is planned for late spring.
