William M. Sylvester, 51
Provincetown native was avid fisherman
William Manuel Sylvester, 51, of Truro, died on Tuesday, April 18, after fighting a courageous battle against cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jan Worthington of Truro, his mother, Myrtle Rose Sylvester of Provincetown, and a brother, Frank X. Gaspar of Long Beach, California.
Billy was born and brought up in Provincetown and was always proud to say that he was a “West Ender.” From the time he was a small boy, he climbed into fishermen’s dories and tried to get them to take him on a trip. He loved to fish and it became his life’s work.
When not fishing commercially out of places like New Bedford, Chatham, Alaska and Provincetown, he could be found on Gull Pond fishing for trout or on his boat, the Jani Girl, fishing off Race Point for bass. A natural and expert cook who never used a recipe, he made huge seafood feasts for friends and family with an ease and grace that were incomparable. Family members characterize him as a big, lion-hearted man with a generous soul, who was passionate as fire, sometimes full of hot air, a lover of the earth and most at home on the water.
He was devoted to those he loved and he will be missed forever by his wife and his many beloved friends and family members. In addition to his wife, mother and brother, he is survived by his in-laws, John and Lucinda Worthington of Truro; his sisters-in-law and their families, Pam and Ted Franklin of Truro and their daughters Jessica and Anabel Franklin, Susan and William Brennan of Westwood and their children Spencer and Carson Brennan, Mary and K Kachadurian of Weston and their children Carla, Derek and Kyle Kachadurian, and Pat Worthington and Brian Kinsella of Truro and their son Aidan Kinsella. He is also survived by his former companion, Faye Freeman Perry, and her children, Danielle Freeman of Provincetown and Eric Freeman of Brewster.
Memorial donations may be made to the Billy Sylvester Memorial College Scholarship Fund, in care of the Truro Fire Association, P.O. Box 88, Truro, MA 02666, or to the Truro Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 2013, Truro, MA 02666.
