Harriet A. Costa, 95
Billingsgate Motel proprietor
Harriet Alberta Costa, 95, of Wellfleet, died Wednesday at Cape Heritage in Sandwich.
She was the wife of the late Wilfred J. Costa and sister of the late Bertha Shelton of St. Petersburg, Fla.
Mrs. Costa was born in Wellfleet but lived most of her youth in various East Coast cities. After several years in Florida, she returned to Wellfleet, where she lived most of her life. After her marriage to Wilfred, she rented rooms in their home and owned the restaurant now known as the Lighthouse. In the 1950s the Costas were proprietors of the Wellfleet Public Market, and in 1962 built the Billingsgate Motel on Wellfleet Harbor. She owned and operated the motel until her retirement in 1985. During the later years of her life she was a resident of Cape Heritage where she received excellent care from its staff and most recently from Allegiance Hospice.
Harriet was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed her church, guests who returned to her motel year after year, doing crossword puzzles, and playing games with friends and family.
She is survived by a son, Vern of Marstons Mills; a stepson, Wilfred Jr. of North Windham, Conn.; four grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and two nephews.
A funeral service was to be held in Wellfleet on May 2. Burial was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the United Methodist Church, Main St., Wellfleet, MA 02667, or Allegiance Hospice, P.O. Box 752, Sagamore, MA 02561.
