Catherine D. Sonntag, 55
Actress performed in film & Provincetown
Catherine Dierlam Sonntag, 55, died at home in Chatham on April 8 after a long illness.
She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Ned Sonntag, and their cats, George, Rollo, Fred and Edgar.
Mrs. Sonntag was born in Gainesville, Fla. and attended high school in Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y. She graduated from Bennington College in 1972.
She was active in Off-Broadway theater in New York City from the late ’70s on, with the Medusa's Revenge troupe, Charles Ludlam's Ridiculous Theatrical Company and several plays with Ethyl Eichelberger's ensemble.
She is best remembered for her role in Woody Allen's film “Shadows and Fog,” and had parts in “Angel Heart,” “Romeo Is Bleeding” and Oprah Winfrey’s “Beloved.” Mrs. Sonntag performed for several summers with Sideshows by the Seashore at Coney Island.
She was a longtime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance and an outspoken advocate of size acceptance. Her Coney Island performance piece on the subject appeared in Leah D. Frank's 1995 collection “Facing Forward.”
Mrs. Sonntag appeared with Marj Conn in a number of local productions in the early ’90s and directed a production of “Under Milk Wood” for the Provincetown Theatre Company in April of 1992.
Unitarian Universalist services will be held for Mrs. Sonntag at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Chatham Unitarian Universalist Meeting House, 805 Main St., Chatham.
