Baiba Briedis, 64
Environmentalist, former grant administrator
Baiba Briedis, 64, of Provincetown, died on Saturday June 3, following a brief battle with cancer.
Born in Riga, Latvia, she was the daughter of the late Karlis and Elvira Irene Briedis. She lived in Germany before moving with her parents to this country and settling in South Carolina. Years later she lived in New Jersey, New York, Amherst and Pennsylvania before moving permanently to Provincetown in 2003. She was a graduate of Douglas College and Stoneybrook University in New Jersey where she received her master’s degree in French. She later attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst where she pursued a PhD in French.
Ms. Briedis retired in 2002 from Penn State University where she worked as an administrator of grants and contracts in the college of the liberal arts.
In 2004 she married her partner of 28 years, Jeannette Bragger. They were both volunteers at the Provincetown Soup Kitchen. Ms. Briedis was also a member of the Provincetown Personnel Board. She was an avid environmentalist, dedicating much of her time to the protection of animals. She was a volunteer at Mass. Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Besides her spouse, she is survived by her four cats, Oliver, Sundance, Toby and Minou.
Funeral services under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home in Provincetown are private. Memorial donations may be made to Carrie A.
