Henrique Duarte, 84
Former fisherman was captain of Charlotte G.
Henrique DeJesus Duarte, 84, of Provincetown, died on Monday, June 12, at the EPOCH Senior Health Care center in Harwich following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Maria DeGuia (Barros) Duarte, to whom he was married for 59 years.
Mr. Duarte was born in Vinha DeCostello, Portugal, in 1921. He began his fishing career at the age of 12 as a dory fisherman. His uncle, Arthur Duarte, sponsored his trip to America in 1946 to start fishing in the commercial fleet in Provincetown. In 1948, after working and saving for two years, he was able to send for his wife and five children to join him in the states. He had three more children who were born in Provincetown.
Mr. Duarte became the captain of his own boat, the Charlotte G., in 1951. After he retired in 1983, he kept busy making and mending nets for the boats in the fleet.
Mr. Duarte is survived by four sons, Joaquin Duarte of Candia, N.H., Manuel Duarte of Spencer, Mass., Raymond Duarte of Provincetown and Vincent Duarte of North Truro; and three daughters, Odelia Simichak of Ellington, Conn., Maria Ritchie of South Yarmouth, Mass., and Candida Cosentino of Brentwood, N.H. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and his sister Teresa of Portugal. He was the father of the late James Duarte, who died in 2004.
