Margaret Bertzold
Margaret Bertzold, 75

Former Gull Walk Inn & Provincetown Gym owner

Margaret "Marge" Bertzold, 75, of Truro, died unexpectedly at her home on July 21.

Born in the township of Warren, N.J., she was the daughter of the late John E. and Clara May (Mobus) Bertzold.

Ms. Bertzold was a resident of the Outer Cape for over 30 years, residing in both Truro and Provincetown. She was the former owner of the Gull Walk Inn in Provincetown which she purchased in 1978. She was the first woman innkeeper of a guest house in Provincetown that was solely run by and for women. She also was the former co-owner of the Provincetown Gym, which she purchased in 1987 and sold in 1994.

In 1994 until 2002 she spent her winters at her home in Florida, located at Riv Del Sooth in Dania, Fla. She became a full-time Truro resident in 2002.

In 1949 she was scouted by the Texas All Stars Softball team but chose instead to travel to Europe and throughout much of the world with her late partner Mim Thygesen, who died in the mid-1970s. She and Mim built a small pilot boat named the Gemini which they sailed from Nova Scotia to Florida in the early '60s. While living in Florida she became an avid gun collector and hunter. She was also one of the first women to join a hunting club in Truro.

Ms. Bertzold is survived by three sisters, Dorothy, Elizabeth and Clara; one brother, Stanley; as well as several beloved nieces and nephews and her godson, Noel Thygesen of California. She is also survived by countless friends she met throughout her life, especially those who came to the Gull Walk.

A memorial service is being planned for the fall. If desired, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Lakota Wolf Preserve, 89 Mt. Pleasant Road, Columbia, N.J. 07832. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown.
