Karen Lee Stewart, 64
Artist & writer enjoyed collecting rocks
Karen Lee (Hatchell) Stewart, 64, of Provincetown, died July 19 at Cape Cod Hospital following a long illness. She was the wife of Robert Stewart of Provincetown.
Mrs. Stewart was born in Boston, the daughter of the late Henry and Virginia (Coombs) Hatchell. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in literature from Tufts University and a master’s degree in fine arts from Boston University Museum School.
She was both an artist and a writer. For many years she was an avid rock collector. Frequently she would research an unusual rock to determine what particular type it might be. Prior to living in Provincetown she had lived in Orleans, Yarmouth Port, Osterville and Washington, D.C. While living in Washington she taught art and ran an art studio in Georgetown.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Charles Henry Foltz, and his wife, Emiko, of Honolulu, Hawaii; two daughters, Phoebe Virginia Lee Stewart of Provincetown and Susan Jane Stewart of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Christopher Hatchell of New Haven, Conn.; one sister, Sara Parnell of Hong Kong and South Carolina; two aunts, Doreen Coombs of Yarmouth and Phoebe C. Mulligan of Scituate; three grandchildren and two nieces. Her loss is also felt by her extended family, Robert A. Stewart II and his wife Kelly and two grandsons and one great grandson, Robert Stewart III of Tennessee and Colorado.
In accordance with Mrs. Stewart’s wishes a private memorial service will take place in Scituate in the fall. If desired, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Helping Our Women, 336 Commercial Street #9, Provincetown, MA 02657 or to the Lewis A. Young, Post 3152, VFW, Jerome Smith Road, Provincetown, MA 02657. Arrangements are under the guidance and direction of the McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown.
