OBITUARIES

John Everett White
John Everett White, 66

Former corporate vice president

John Everett White, 66, died at home in Provincetown on Aug. 6 of pulmonary fibrosis.

He was the spouse of writer and nurse Richard Ferri, with whom he lived for nearly 26 years.

Mr. White was born in 1940 in Memphis, Tenn., and was the beloved son of the late William O. White and Minnie J. Whitten. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in engineering. For many years he was vice-president of the parent company of such stores as Bloomingdale’s and Lord & Taylor.

Mr. White and his spouse were married by the Rev. Brenda Haywood in their garden on June 30, 2004. They were both committed and faithful members of St. Mary’s of the Harbor Episcopal Church in Provincetown.

In addition to his spouse, Mr. White is survived by his brother, Robert White of Clinton, Miss., and many nieces and nephews.

He was lovingly cared for by his spouse, Hospice of Cape Cod, Mary Oliver, Lisa Ferri-Lanni and his many friends and family.

The poet Mary Oliver celebrated Mr. White’s life of gentleness and care by reciting two of her poems in his honor. Longtime friend Cynthia Forrest-Smith remembered him in eulogy speaking of his wit, intelligence and gentle manner. Gary Reinhart recited Kaddish in honor of Mr. White’s mother, who was named after the Jewish nurse who took care of her when the doctors said she would die. Because of the nurse’s care, Minnie Jane lived for many years and had three sons.

The Rev. Jack Smith celebrated a funeral mass of holy Eucharist attended by the Rev. Haywood. Burial was private in Provincetown Cemetery.

Dr. Ferri requests that memorial donations be made in Mr. White’s memory to Hospice of Cape Cod, St. Mary’s of the Harbor Church, or to Helping Our Women.
