Sally E. Coleman
Sally E. Coleman, 72

Sally E. Coleman, 72, of Wellfleet, died Oct. 23, in North Chatham.

Born July 27, 1934, in Watertown to Warren J. Coleman and Natalie V. Fletcher, Ms. Coleman moved to Cape Cod in 1947 and lived there for almost 60 years, in Orleans and Brewster, before settling in Wellfleet.

Ms. Coleman graduated from Wellfleet High School and Brockton Beauty Academy. For a few years, she was a hairdresser at Connie’s in Brewster. She also drove a Coast Guard Beach shuttle bus and handicapped school bus, delivered flowers and worked in the Eastham Elementary School cafeteria. But her favorite job was being a mother.

Ms. Coleman always put her children first, supporting their many school activities and church youth groups with the arts and crafts she loved. Her children describe her as an extraordinary mother, strong, selfless, generous and kind. She was known for her sewing skills. Other hobbies included ceramics, hooked rugs, hand-made flags, sugar Easter eggs, cake decorating and the CB radio during the ’70s — many may remember her as “Stringbean.” In the summer months, she enjoyed Skaket Beach in Orleans or watching the waves at the Wellfleet oceanside.

A cowgirl at heart, Ms. Coleman was known for her love of animals, She had an especial fondness for horses. Her home was often the port of rescue for injured birds of all kinds, squirrels, raccoons, goats, geese, chinchilla, possum, dogs and cats, each of which she cared for and returned to the wild, kept herself, or gave to an adopted home.

She is survived by four children: Jeffrey C. Wade of Houston, Texas; E. Christian Wade and his wife Inna of Jacksonville, Fla.; Noelle D. Martin and her husband Jeffrey of Fayetteville, N.C.; and Michelle R. Dubé of Eastham; grandchildren Claire Abigail, Chad Nathaniel and Cassandra Lynn Martin; sisters Anne C. Partridge and Jean Baker; and stepsister Ruth Lewis, also of Wellfleet. In addition, she leaves lifelong friends Joyce Harding, Jo Wood and childhood pen pal Anna Parker of Clydebank, Scotland, with whom she has corresponded since World War II when she was 10 years old. She is predeceased by her parents; two children, son York A. Wade and daughter Lynn Wade; and her stepbrother Charles Fletcher.

An open house to celebrate the life of Sally Coleman will be held below the Wellfleet Methodist Church from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Helping Our Women at (508) 487-4357, www.helpingourwomen.org, or Harbor for Healing by contacting Shirley Bloomer at (508) 945-0747.
