Mary Ellen Ribeiro, 77

Provincetown native who visited often

Mary Ellen (Holmes) Ribeiro, 77, a Provincetown native who lived in New Bedford, died after a long illness on Sunday, Oct. 22, at Alden Court Nursing Home in Fairhaven. She was the daughter of the late Gabriel and Alice (Browne) Holmes.

Mrs. Ribeiro was born in Provincetown and attended school here until she was 15 years old and her family moved to New Bedford. She returned to Provincetown frequently to care for her ailing father, who lived on Prince Street, and after his death continued to visit her cousin Jane Grave, who lives here.

She was employed as an imprinter at Titleist until her retirement and was a communicant of St. Kilian Church, where she was the recipient of the Marian Medal. She was very active in her church.

Mrs. Ribeiro is survived by a son, James J. Ribeiro of Colonial Heights, Va.; three grandchildren; five sisters; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late James “Sonny” Holmes and Gabriel Holmes Jr.

There was no visitation but a funeral Mass was held at Kilian Church. Burial was at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Provincetown.
