Mary Elizabeth Horner, 88
Former French professor
Mary Elizabeth (Hill) Horner, 88, of Provincetown, formerly of Wellfleet, died Jan. 25.
Mrs. Horner was born on Oct. 15, 1918, in Seoul, Korea. As the daughter of American Presbyterian missionaries she lived in Pyongyang, Korea, until she was 18. She came to the U.S. to attend Wheaton College in Illinois, where she majored in music and would meet her future husband, George Roland Horner (1913-1996).
After they married in January 1942 and started a family, WW II would delay their career plans until 1948.
Mrs. Horner would then travel to Paris, France and Cameroon, West Africa, to assist her graduate student husband, while he was conducting anthropological research, in earning his doctorate. While in Paris, Mary became fluent in French. This would serve her well as she was to become a professor of French during the 1960s and 1970s at Eastern Nazarene College in Wollaston. After retiring, she enjoyed spending several years as a volunteer with South Shore Elder Services.
Mrs. Horner was a long-time resident of Braintree and then Abington. She moved to Wellfleet in 1997 to be closer to her family after being widowed in 1996. In 2003, she relocated to the Cape End Manor in Provincetown due to deteriorating health.
She is survived by her five children, George Horner and his wife, Jeannette (Andrews) Horner, of Milford, N.H., Mary-Jo Horner of Wellfleet, Harry Horner of Boston, Carol Horner and her husband, Peter Ruskis, of New Limerick, Maine, and Alice Horner of Schenectady, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Scott Horner and his wife, Michelle Noonan-Horner, of Maynard, and Jennifer Horner of Raleigh, N.C.; and one great-grandchild Sarah Michelle.
If desired, donations may be made in memory of Mary Horner to Massachusetts Audubon, Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Box 236, South Wellfleet, MA 02663. Arrangements are under the direction of the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown.
