William Albert Michael
William Albert Michael, 87

Former Coast Guardsman & Park Service employee

William Albert “Bill” Michael, 87, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., died Dec. 4 at his home. He was the husband for 63 years of Ernestine (Thompson) Michael.

Mr. Michael was born March 2, 1919, in Palatka, Fla., to Lucy Jane (Comer) and Harley Rophile Michael. He was raised in new Smyrna Beach, graduating from high school in 1939, and he then entered the Coast Guard. He was stationed at the Wood End Coast Guard Station, Provincetown, where he met Ernestine Thompson, daughter of Margaret (Williams) and John V. Morris of Provincetown.

They married in Lynn on March 11, 1943, and then returned to New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where Bill worked for the Florida East Coast railroad for 20 years. When the railroad went on strike they returned to Provincetown, where he worked for the National Park Service. He retired in December of 1985, after 22 years of service with the NPS.

Mr. Michael enjoyed all sports, fishing and being around his grandchildren and especially his great-grandson Corey Heaney of Edgewater, Fla. He was very much loved and will be missed by all.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Joyce Coleman and husband Jack of Provincetown and Virginia Beach, Va., Carol Wesseldine and husband Bill of Provincetown and Altmar, N.Y., Donna Hayward and husband Charlie of Provincetown and North Windham, Conn., and Pat Borden and husband Larry of Provincetown and New Smyrna Beach; a son, John F. Michael, of Provincetown and New Smyrna Beach; three sisters, Juanita Robinson, Eunice Burch and Alice Kinderman, all of Florida; two brothers-in-law, Leland J. Morris and family of Middletown, N.J., and Donald Morris and family of Provincetown. He also leaves 17 grandchildren, including Rachael Michael and Josh Richardson of Provincetown and Jessica (Andrews) Heaney and Steven Andrews, formerly of Provincetown, now living in Florida; plus 42 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

He was pre-deceased by three sisters, Thelma Robinson, Orieon Croft and Elnora Mickler, all of Florida, and a great-grandson, Chad Green, of California.

A memorial service is being planned for later this summer at the Capt. Jack Williams family lot in Provincetown.
