Joan M. Costa, 76
Provincetown native, artist
Joan M. Costa, of Orleans, died on April 13 after a long illness at Pleasant Bay Nursing Home in Brewster.
She was born on July 8, 1930, in Provincetown, where she was raised. She attended Provincetown public schools.
Art was a vital part of her life, and she studied under several well-known artists, among them Henry Hensche. She continued to paint after leaving the Cape and upon entering her first juried art show in California won first, second and third prizes. She was a member of the Orleans Art Association. She was also active in the health care industry, working in several nursing homes in California before returning to the Cape.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Girvetz, of California; two sons, William Costa and fiancée Diane Brigham, of Truro, and James Costa, of Orleans; three grandchildren, Will Costa, of Truro, Kelly Costa, of Tewksbury, and Amy Carona, of California; a great-grandson, Devon William Costa, of Tewksbury; and two sisters, Paula Roda, of Brewster, and Mary Serpa, of Wareham; as well as several nieces and nephews.
