OBITUARIES

Edward J. O’Hara, 84

WWII vet leaves many friends here

Edward J. “Ed” O’Hara, 84, of Provincetown and formerly of Newton Upper Falls, died on Dec. 26, 2006 after a short illness.

He was the beloved husband of the late Veronica (Monks) O’Hara, and devoted father of Deborah A. Costa and husband Leo; Maureen Kazarian and husband Daniel; and Sharon Perkins and husband Arthur. He was the grandfather of Kerri and Rory Kazarian and Michael and T.J. Costa.

Mr. O’Hara was a retired chief health inspector for the city of Boston and a WWII Coast Guard veteran. He was a member of the Needham VFW Lt. Manson H. Carter Post and the Provincetown Lewis F. Young VFW Post.

In Provincetown he leaves behind his family of many friends. He was affectionately known as the unofficial “mayor” of Provincetown. He met and helped many people in the community by advising them about the state health code, making deliveries or providing transportation, often making lasting friendships. He exemplified how to live life to its fullest.

A funeral Mass was held at Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Church in Newton Upper Falls, with the funeral directed from the George F. Doherty and Sons Funeral Home in Needham. Interment with full military honors followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Needham.

His characteristic good humor, fellowship and community service, legendary escapades and friendship will be celebrated at 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, at the Surf Club. All those attending are asked to bring photos and write a memory of Ed on a 5-by-7-inch note card. The note card memories will be read at the memorial and later placed in a memory book for Ed’s family. Memorial donations may be made to the Edward J. O’Hara scholarship fund, c/o the Cape Cod Foundation, 259 Willow St., Yarmouthport, MA 02675. Anyone with questions or wishing to help with the celebration of Mr. O’Hara’s life may contact Carrie Benjamin at (508) 509-7968 or Tina Costa at (508) 487-2233.
