Doris Dickason De Carlo
Artist & teacher
Doris Dickason De Carlo, 87, of Wellfleet, died at the Liberty Commons nursing home in Chatham on May 2. She was the wife of the late artist Charles De Carlo.
Mrs. De Carlo was born in Toledo, Ohio. Her family moved to Detroit where her father, Carl, was a chief engineer for the Ford Motor Company. She graduated in 1943 from the University of Michigan with a degree in architecture and design, then continued her education at the University of Iowa where she received a master’s of fine art.
She began her teaching career in the Big Rapids, Michigan public school system, followed by a teaching stint in Duluth, Minn. She then spent a year studying painting in Paris, France.
Returning to the States, Mrs. De Carlo settled in Ann Arbor, Mich., working as an interior designer for the Ford Motor Company. Moving to Connecticut, she again employed her interior design skills at the Sikorsky Helicopter Company.
She married Charles De Carlo, a native of New Haven, Conn., in 1955. For many years she worked as an art teacher at New Haven’s Hamden Hall, a private day school.
She moved to Wellfleet with her husband in 1972. Some years later she taught art at the Provincetown High School. While she did not have her own children, she found great pleasure in introducing arts and crafts to many children, including her nieces and nephews.
For many years Mrs. De Carlo and her husband vacationed on Monhegan Island, Maine, where they enjoyed the rugged coast and community of artists and fishermen.
In Wellfleet she enjoyed working in her garden, teaching adult education art classes, her Siamese cats, the public library, singing with the Cantores and appreciating the natural beauty of Cape Cod. In her final years she became an avid fan of breakfasts at The Wicked Oyster with her nephew, Tom. After a delicious breakfast, the two would drive to Wellfleet Harbor to revel in the landscape as they listened to classical music.
She is survived by two brothers, Clifford L. Dickason of Ashland, Ore., and Donald W. Dickason of Tucson, Ariz., and by several loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Richard C. Dickason of Oxnard, Calif.
Donations to honor her memory can be made to the Wellfleet Council on the Aging and the Wellfleet Public Library.
