Franklin H. Lewis Jr., 84
Franklin H. "Sparky" Lewis Jr., 84, of North Truro, died Tuesday, May 8, at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Mildred W. (Knight) Lewis of South Boston.
Born in Truro, Mr. Lewis was the son of Phoebe Ibey and Franklin H. Lewis and the beloved grandson of Stephen Snow Lewis, who was the assistant lightkeeper of Highland Light in 1875 and then the Keeper of Nauset Light from 1882 to 1914.
Mr. Lewis’s family goes even further back, having immigrated here on the Mayflower.
He was the only one in his family of seven children to live to adulthood. He was schooled in Truro and left the Cape only a couple of times as an adult. He loved the land and his gardens were enviable. He shared the fruits of his labor with grateful friends.
Mr. Lewis was a member of the Truro COA's famous strength-training class — the "laughing lifters" — and enjoyed meetings of the COA's men's coffee group. He volunteered to bring the donated bread and baked goods from Grand Union and Dutra's Market for free distribution to Truro residents. He also was a friendly visitor for the COA.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. at the North Cemetery in North Truro with a memorial service and reception following at the Christian Union Church in North Truro on Monday, May 21.
Memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Truro Council on Aging, P.O. Box 1011, Truro, MA 02666.
