Gary Lucas Keyes, 47
Sculptor
Gary Lucas Keyes, 47, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Feb. 12 in Las Vegas after a short illness.
Born Oct. 13, 1959, in Bay City, Mich., Mr. Keyes graduated with a bachelor’s from Kalamazoo College in 1982 and moved to New York City.
In 1990 he opened a handcrafted pottery company in Brooklyn. His work has been shown at the Whitney Museum and at galleries in New York, Long Island and Provincetown. In Provincetown, his endless creativity was also evident in the striking sculptures he made from materials found at Herring Cove.
A long-time resident of “The Hive,” formerly owned by Mary Heaton Vorse, he appeared in the movie “Johnny in Monsterland” and early productions by The Mandalay Opera Company. He was a master gardener and recently turned this gift into a successful landscaping business.
Mr. Keyes also was a gourmet cook, a voracious reader and could complete the Sunday New York Times crossword in ink in 30 minutes. He was a gracious host, a wonderful friend and generous man. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his mother, Ruth Keyes; two brothers, Kevin and Derek; a sister, Kristen James; and two nieces, Miranda and Devon James.
A memorial service celebrating his life was held at his home in Brooklyn on May 12, with friends attending from Europe and across the country. As he always wanted, some of his ashes were sprinkled throughout his garden. A memorial is also planned sometime this summer in Provincetown. Visit his website, www.garykeyes.com.
