Richard E. Medeiros, 78

Decorated vet was former Provincetown letter carrier

Richard E. “Speed” Medeiros, 78, of Truro, formerly of Provincetown, died May 24 at the Cape End Manor Nursing Home in Provincetown following a 10-year battle with diabetes. He was the husband of Edith L. (Peters) Medeiros to whom he was married for 25 years.

Born in Provincetown, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Enos) Medeiros.

During the Korean War he served in the Army for two years and received two Bronze stars.

Mr. Medeiros was well known in Provincetown where he worked as a letter carrier for 27 years retiring in 1991.

He was a former commander of the Lewis Young VFW Post in Provincetown. He was also a member of the American Legion.

Over many years he worked as a part-time photographer for the Cape Cod Times. He was the original bass tuba player in the Provincetown band. In more recent years he played tuba in the Lower Cape Concert Band. He was also a lifelong member of St. Peter the Apostle parish in Provincetown.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two nieces, Nancy Medeiros and Stacy White both of North Truro, four grand-nieces also of North Truro, and his long time friend Harold “Red” Soults of Provincetown. He was the brother of the late Kenny Medeiros.

At his request his funeral services, under the direction of the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown, will be private. If desired, donations in his memory may be made to The American Diabetes Association Boston MA-NH office 330 Congress Street 5th floor Boston, MA 02210; the Truro Council on Aging, P. O. Box 500, Truro, MA 02666; or to Truro Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 2013, Truro, MA 02666.
