OBITUARIES

Nancy E. Fales, 79

Part-time Truro resident traveled widely

Nancy Edgar Fales, 79, of Westport, Conn., and Truro, died peacefully on Friday after a long illness.

The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Graham Edgar, she was born in New York City on Oct. 3, 1927, and grew up in Bronxville, where she attended a small private school. She studied life drawing at Grand Central School of Art before attending Pine Manor College. She went to New York City to study creative writing and learn secretarial skills before taking a job with Harper’s Bazaar.

She married Warren Fales in 1949 and moved to Westport, Conn., in 1951. Mrs. Fales did volunteer work with the Red Cross and later became involved with The Nature Center, now Earthplace, where she ran a volunteer program taking animals to the Norwalk Hospital for pediatric visits to the children’s ward.

In more recent years she studied photography at the Irish Photographic Workshop, Ansel Adams Workshop and the International Center for Photography in New York City. Specializing in travel and nature photography, she traveled extensively throughout Europe, and to Antarctica, New Zealand, China, India and Nepal. Her work has been published and she has received recognition in art shows locally as well as in Truro and Washington, D.C. She was a member of the Fairfield County Hunt Club and the Westport Garden Club. Her hobbies included birding, tennis, bridge and gardening.

She loved sharing her homes in Truro and Westport and loved to entertain. The many parties in her homes were a great joy to her friends. Mrs. Fales was a free spirit and when once asked why she dressed as if she were on a safari, she replied, “because every day is a safari.”

She was predeceased by a son, Toby, and is survived by one son, Michael.
A memorial service was held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Southport, Conn. The Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield, was entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to Earthplace, Trinity Episcopal Church, Southport, the Pequot Library or to the charity of one’s choice.
