Clarence Stanley Smith, 82, of Wellfleet, died on Saturday, June 23, at Pleasant Bay Nursing Home in Brewster.
Mr. Smith was born and raised in Truro. He was a graduate of Orleans High School and a longtime Wellfleet resident. As a WW II veteran, he served as a torpedo man for the USS Fogg and USS Hill. He spent his military service in the North Atlantic and Hawaii. He was employed by Nickerson Lumber Company as a manager of the Wellfleet and Orleans store, and retired after 25 years. After his career with Nickerson Lumber, he started his own real estate company, Clarence Smith Realty in Wellfleet.
Mr. Smith was a member of various organizations, including the American Legion Post #287 in Wellfleet, the VFW in Provincetown, Adams Lodge A.F. & A.M in Wellfleet and the Destroyer Escort Sailors’ Association. For many years he was a corporator for the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, and he also belonged to many town committees in Wellfleet.
He was the devoted husband to Phyllis (Rose) and father of Dale C. Smith, of Wellfleet; brother of Clyde Smith, of Orlando, Florida, Dorothy Rose, of Orleans, and Ruth Jordan, of Truro; grandfather of Dale R. and April E., both of Wellfleet.
A graveside service was held Tuesday in Oakdale Cemetery in Wellfleet. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Wellfleet Police Association, 36 Gross Hill Road, Wellfleet, MA, 02667, or to the Wellfleet Fire Association, P.O. Box 335, Wellfleet, MA, 02667.
