William ‘Marcus’ Smith, 77
Well-known local portrait artist
William “Marcus” Smith, 77, passed away on July 12 at the Epoch Senior Center in Brewster after a long battle with cancer.
Mr. Smith was born in Ohio and later divided his time between California and Provincetown. In his later years he lived year-round on the Cape, first in Provincetown then later in North Truro.
His early art training was in California where he attended art school. As a young man he won a prize creating the logo for the U.S.S. Lake Champlain, an aircraft carrier. He was a highly skilled portrait artist, working mainly in pastel. In 1950 he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Korean War.
For many years he was a well-known figure on Provincetown streets doing portraits, first with Jim Green at the old Whaler’s Wharf until it burned to the ground. Later he continued at a spot on Commercial Street. He was one of the last street artists in Provincetown.
He was a longtime member of the Baha’I Faith.
He is survived by his mother, a brother, Paul Smith, and many nieces and nephews. A sister predeceased him. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Sandy Thomas.
Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Thursday, July 19 at 10:30 a.m.
