OBITUARIES

Ralph Travis Jr., 77

Former Army medic worked at Harvard Medical School

Ralph Ellsworth Travis Jr., 77, passed away in the early morning hours of July 23 after a brief battle with lung cancer.

As was his desire, Mr. Travis died at home under the compassionate care of the Cape Cod VNA Hospice team, including his niece Jamie Nunes of Dennis, 17 days after being diagnosed with stage 4 small cell cancer.

Mr. Travis and his partner of 54 years, Dick Higgins, have called Provincetown home since the early 1960s, first as their getaway home from their jobs in Boston and then on a permanent basis upon retirement in 1988. As with so many others, Provincetown was a natural magnet for Mr. Travis given its special beauty, independent spirit and the welcoming warmth of the local Portuguese community, which mirrored his own Portuguese background.

A native of Hudson, he enlisted in the Army in 1951 and served as a medic in the Korean War. This experience led him down a medical-related career path with jobs at hospitals in Washington, D.C., Westborough and New York City, ending with 28 years of employment at Harvard Medical School in Boston. When he retired he was associate director of alumni.

In addition to his life partner, Mr. Travis is survived by his two sisters, Ann Madden, of Hudson, and Eleanor Nunes and her husband Ollie, of Hudson and Truro; and nine nephews. He was also the brother of the late Norma Garcia, formerly of Hudson.

A funeral Mass will be held this Thursday in St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown at 9:30 a.m. There will be no visiting hours. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown.
