Xavier McLeod, 53
Vietnam vet worked at VMES
Xavier McLeod, 53, of North Truro, died unexpectedly on July 11 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He was the husband of Holly Ferreira.
Born in Auburn, N.Y., he was the son of Lola (Bentley) McLeod of Willingboro, N.J., and the late Josiah McLeod.
Mr. McLeod was a veteran of the Army and served in Vietnam.
He lived in Provincetown and North Truro for over 20 years. At the time of his death he worked as a custodian at the Veterans Memorial Elementary School in Provincetown where he was very well-liked.
According to his mother-in-law, Beverly Ferreira, her daughter Holly received many letters and messages from kids, teachers and parents about how kind Mr. McLeod was to all.
“One letter from one of the kids said ‘We’re going to miss him so much. He was so kind to us.’ People that he touched, who we didn’t even know, that he did kind things for,” she said.
He also drove a school bus for the Provincetown schools for several years. He was a familiar face at both the Lobster Pot, where he was formerly employed for more than 15 years, and at the former 150 Market Place (prior to that it was called L&A Market), where he had also been employed.
In addition to his mother and his wife, he is survived by his two children, Shawn and Shavonn Lynch, both of Auburn, N.Y.; one grandson and one granddaughter; three brothers, Michael McLeod, Vaughn McLeod and Trent McLeod; four sisters, Renee McLeod, Tonia McLeod, Wanda McLeod and Dori McLeod. He is also survived by his father- and mother-in-law, Gordon and Beverly (Cook) Ferreira of Provincetown; his brother- and sister-in-law Leo and Tracy (Ferreira) Rose of North Truro; and his brother-in-law Kevin Ferreira of New Bedford.
A funeral service was held at St. Peter the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St., Provincetown, with arrangements by the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown. If desired, memorial contributions in honor of Mr. McLeod may be made payable to Tracy Rose and sent to Lori Meads at Seamen’s Bank, 221 Commercial St., Provincetown, MA 02657.
