Preston Carter, 77
Poet had a passion for literature
Preston Carter, 77, of Truro, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, Aug. 31, with his wife, the well-known portrait artist Nancy Craig, by his side.
Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Royal B. and Linsly (Atkinson) Carter. Mr. Carter graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College in 1952. He spent time studying at the American Academy in Florence, Italy.
Although they moved to Truro in 1963 from Bronxville, N.Y., the couple spent time living abroad in Spain, England and Ireland between 1973 and 1987. During their life together, Mr. Carter wrote poetry and managed his wife’s career. He was a quiet man with a passion for literature, but most of all he enjoyed the close bond and common interests he shared with his wife Nancy, to whom he was married for 44 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Joan Carter Indig of Basking Ridge, N.J., three nieces and one nephew.
A memorial service will take place at noon Sept. 8 at the Church of St. Mary of the Harbor, Commercial St., Provincetown.
If desired, donations in honor of Mr. Carter may be made to the Truro Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 2013, Truro, MA 02666. Arrangements are under the direction of Gately-McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown.
