Dale Smith
Dale Martin Smith, 43

Boat mechanic & commercial fisherman

Dale Smith, 43, also known affectionately as ÒDaleyÓ and ÒDick Jag,Ó died unexpectedly in his home in North Truro on Sept. 4.

He was born in Meriden, Conn., on Dec. 8, 1963, and attended elementary school there until he moved to Florida. He relocated to Wellfleet at the age of 13 and made the town his permanent home base.

He considered himself a jack of all trades, and a master of none. He was happiest and most at peace on the sea as a commercial fisherman. Watching the sun rise and set over the ocean was a spiritual experience for him. Involved in every aspect of the shellfish business, he was an excellent scallop shucker. He worked as a boat mechanic at several locations on the Lower Cape. Extremely innovative, he could fix anything from cars to bicycles, stereos to major appliances. He was generous and lived to help others in need.

He was an American patriot who enjoyed his freedom, spending time with himself and sleeping outdoors. He was well-known at the Mass Appeal Thrift Shop in Wellfleet, but was often seen shirtless in the summer. A frequent bus rider and bicyclist, he also loved the beach and woods.

A connoisseur of pop culture, Mr. Smith enjoyed mystery novels and was a movie fan. Among his favorites were ÒCool Hand Luke,Ó ÒOne Flew Over the Cuckoo's NestÓ and ÒPulp Fiction.Ó He also enjoyed listening to music and could be heard singing every word to Nirvana Unplugged at least once a week. He only recently discovered he had a passion to dance.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Don and Carol Smith, of Wellfleet; his sister and two nephews, Tammi Liska and Danny and Joshua, of Chatham; his stepsister, Debbie, of Dennis; his stepbrother, Gordon, of Omaha, Nebraska; his fiancŽe, Carmen Marie Thomas, of Provincetown; and several close friends. He will be especially missed by his faithful companion for over 10 years, Scooby, a black Irish setter-English springer spaniel mix dog who was with Mr. Smith wherever he went.

A memorial service will be organized shortly. Call Carmen at (508) 364-0138 if you have any ideas or would like to help celebrate his life. Donations may be made in his name to Interfaith Council for the Homeless, P.O. Box 828, Orleans, MA 02653.
