OBITUARIES

David Carroll, 60

Retired editor was active volunteer

David P. Carroll, 60, of Provincetown died Saturday, Oct. 27, at Seashore Point, Cape End Manor Campus, after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Carroll had only been at the Cape End Manor one day when he succumbed to his illness.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, April 15, 1947, he was the son of the late Eugene A. and Ann Marie (McHugh) Carroll.

Mr. Carroll was a beloved member of the Provincetown community. He served as a board member and volunteer of the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod and Bread & Roses, a residence and service organization in Fairfield County, Conn. He was referred to as “the most generous person on the planet” for his dedication and service in the community. He was always available to give someone a ride to appointments, deliver meals or lend a hand cooking at the support group. He also had been a member of Serenity by the Sea Roundup in Provincetown for five years.

Mr. Carroll was a graduate of Villanova University in Villanova, Pa., class of 1969. He was an avid linguist, fluent in both Spanish and Italian. After college he began a successful career in publishing, first in sales and thereafter as an editor for Appleton Publishing, McGraw Hill (where held the position of editor-in-chief) and other publishing companies until his retirement in 1998.

Growing up in a military family, he had the opportunity to live in a variety of places throughout the U.S., England and South America. Just prior to moving to Provincetown in 2002, he spent three years living in Rome and before that in Connecticut.

He is survived by his stepmother, Annie B. Carroll of St. Augustine, Fla.; his brother Eugene A. “Toby” Carroll Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Houston, Texas, and his three children, Stephen, Brian and Meghan; his nephews Timothy Carroll of Huntsville, Texas, Erin Carroll of Fort Worth, Texas, and Shanna Naron of Houston, Texas; his cousin Glenn W. “Buzz” Frum Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo., Matthew Frum of Ragged Point, Calif., Christie and David Frum and several other cousins. He was the brother of the late Connie (Carroll) Benson formerly of Bryn Mawr, Pa. He will be missed by his extended family of friends including Bruce Levy, Jack McMahon, Scott Dinsmore and Michael Cheney in Provincetown and Betsy Adams and Joe Sweeney of Connecticut.

A memorial service in Provincetown will be held in the near future with another service in Connecticut in spring. The time and date of the service will soon be available via Gately-McHoul Funeral Home in Provincetown at (508) 487-4470. Meantime, it has been suggested that his many friends perform a simple act of kindness in David’s memory. If desired contributions in his honor may be made to the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, P.O. Box 1522 Provincetown, MA 02657.
