Mary Ueberwasser, 85
Mrs. Mary Ueberwasser, 85, of Jupiter, Fla., and North Truro, died on Nov. 14, at Liberty Commons nursing facility in Chatham after suffering a stroke.
She was born Oct. 12, 1922, in West Haven, Conn., the eldest child of the late Durward and Mary Leeper.
She graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1943 and was a veteran of WW II. While serving in the Navy she met and married her spouse, the late Francis "Frank" Edward Ueberwasser.
When the war ended, Mrs. Ueberwasser and her husband settled in Yonkers, N.Y., and raised three children, Donna, Karen and Mark.
Upon receiving a master's degree in education from Columbia University in New York City in 1959, Mrs. Ueberwasser embarked upon a teaching career spanning more than 20 years at the Walt Whitman Junior High School in Yonkers. She approached her work with great passion and, through the years, received innumerable accolades from students, parents and administrators alike.
She and her husband retired to North Truro in 1983. She was an avid reader, gardener and physical culturalist. She greatly enjoyed studying European history and loved exploring the city she loved most, Paris.
She is survived by her siblings, Verne, Durward and Donna; her children, Donna, Karen and Mark; her grandchildren, Mark and Carol; and her dear friends Peter and Bernice.
A memorial service is planned for early summer in Cape Cod.
