William J. Cooper, 82
Longtime schoolteacher was instrumental in Highland Light restoration
William J. Cooper, 82, died at his home in Wellfleet on Friday, Dec. 7. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Orgelman Cooper.
Born in Jamaica, N.Y., on June 13, 1925, he was the son of the late Ralph C. and Nettie Cooper.
He graduated from Wooster School and Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn., and served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Eniwetok during WW II.
After spending summers on the Cape since birth, he moved to Wellfleet with his family in 1967 and was a teacher in the Nauset School District for 22 years, serving as principal of the Wellfleet Elementary School and teaching science and math in the Nauset Middle School, until his retirement in 1989.
He served on the board of the Truro Historical Society, where he and his wife were part of a small group of individuals who began the successful restoration and relocation of Highland Light.
He also was a faithful member of the First Congregational Parish of Truro.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, William J. Cooper Jr., of Brewster; Marnie Cooper, of Windsor, Conn.; Karen Cooper and Armand Cloutier, of West Dennis; and his grandsons, Christopher Miller and Timothy Miller, both of Somerville.
A memorial service was held on Monday Dec. 10th in the First Congregational Parish of Truro. Burial is private.
