Ron Dumas
Ronald R. Dumas

Pharmacist, Southbridge native

EASTHAM — Ronald R. Dumas, 59, of North Eastham, died Dec. 19 of complications from chronic lymphocytic leukemia at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis. He was the husband for 29 years of Carol K. Dumas.

Born and raised in Southbridge, Ron was the son of Armand and Rose (Galardi Dumas). He was a graduate of Southbridge High School, where he played in the band and was a member of the cross country and track teams. He graduated from University of Connecticut in 1972. At UConn, he majored in pharmacy and was a member of Alpha Zeta Omega fraternity and the marching band, playing trumpet. Summers, he worked at Ovide’s restaurant in Southbridge.

He worked as a pharmacist for more than 30 years, starting with his hometown pharmacy, Lavallee’s, after graduating from UConn, then Sturbridge Pharmacy. On the Cape, he worked for the former Dunnington’s in Harwich, CVS in Orleans and, most recently, the Grand Union Pharmacy in Provincetown.

In 1978 he married and settled in Sturbridge, where he and his family lived for seven years before moving to Cape Cod in 1985. They built a home in Eastham, raising three daughters whom he cherished. He was a loving husband and father who was involved in all aspects of his daughters’ lives.

He was a communicant of St. Joan of Arc Church in Orleans.

Ron loved to cook and was known affectionately by his family as “Chef Ron D” and took pleasure in making decorated birthday cakes for his three daughters and special dinners for friends and family. He enjoyed clamming in Town Cove, mowing his lawn, hunting and skiing in Maine, traveling, dining out and, most of all, spending time with his family. He was never without a camera or video camera at family events or vacation. He loved a good cigar and a dry martini “with a twist and two olives.” He was a friend to all who met him.

His leukemia diagnosis never stopped him from living his life to the fullest extent possible. He endured many chemotherapy regimens and procedures and often drove himself back and forth to treatments for several years. He was courageous in facing his disease and its many obstacles and continued to work full-time until recently.

In addition to his wife, he leaves three daughters, Liz of Jamaica Plain, Emily of Brighton, and Andre of Eastham; a sister, Johanna Leighton of Carver; his mother-in-law, Doris Kozlowski of Eastham; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Joan of Arc Church Orleans on Dec. 22. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery, Eastham. Arrangements were by The Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans.
