Patrick J. Shea, 81

Vet served during Korean conflict

Patrick J. "Toss" Shea, 81, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, died Dec. 22. He was the husband for 47 years of Margaret “Misread” (Kearney) Shear.

Born in Springfield, the son of the late John and Bridget (Flynn) Shear, he was a lifelong city resident and a graduate of Springfield Technical High School. Toss served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He served the city of Springfield as a firefighter for 32 years and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. He was a member of the Springfield Retired Police and Firefighters Association Inc., the Springfield American Legion Post #430 and the Disabled American Veterans' Association.

For the last 20 years, after his retirement, he spent summers at the North Truro Campground. When he was on the Cape, he worked for Art’s Dune Tours in Provincetown.

In addition to his wife, Margaret, he is survived by his three sons, Patrick M. and his wife Chris of Feeding Hills, John J. of Springfield, and Thomas C. and his wife Cathy of Southwick; his daughter, Theresa B. Shea of Springfield; his brother, John Shea of Springfield; his seven grandchildren, Patrick, Jonathan, Timothy, Brendan, Rayne, Ashley and Kathleen Shea; and his two beloved nephews, Kevin Shea and Brian Shea. He was predeceased by a sister and his three brothers, Mary Garvey and Thomas, Bart and Cornelius Shea.

A service was held on Dec. 27 at Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Northampton VA Medical Center, in care of the General Post Fund #1003 at 421 North Main St., Leeds, MA 01053.
