Carol Westcott
Carol Whorf Westcott, 82

Artist

Carol Whorf Westcott, 82, of Provincetown, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend and renowned artist, died peacefully at the Cape End Manor on Saturday, April 26. Her husband and children were at her bedside.

Mrs. Westcott was born in New York City on Jan. 18, 1926, the daughter of the late John and Vivienne Wing Whorf. During her childhood years in Provincetown, Carol began her studies in art with her father, the internationally acclaimed watercolorist, and later worked as an apprentice for the late Peter Hunt. Carol was a member of the 1944 graduating class of Provincetown High School. She continued her studies at the Cape Cod School of Painting, founded by Charles Hawthorne, and at the Rhode Island School of Design.

In 1945 she married 2nd Lt. Charles Westcott, USMC, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. While stationed at numerous military facilities, from east coast to west, Charles and Carol made the Marine Corps their life, raising six children and establishing many loving friendships. Carol continued with her painting when time permitted and, during the early 1970s while living in the Washington D.C. area, rekindled her passion by taking classes at the Corcoran School of Art and during the summers with Henry Hensche in Provincetown. In 1977 Carol and Charles returned home to Provincetown as full-time residents. Over the years, Carol’s works were displayed in many of the fine galleries in Provincetown and on the Cape.

Carol was a faithful, lifelong Episcopalian and a devout member of St. Mary of the Harbor Church in Provincetown. She was a lover of books, an inquisitive and avid reader who was never shy about challenging the status quo. Compassionate to all she knew, she was always a defender of human dignity.

Along with her husband, Charles, she is survived by her daughter, Mary Westcott Fry, of Fairfax, Va.; her sons, Mark, of Malibu, Calif., Christopher and Matthew, both of Fredericksburg, Va., and her daughter, Amy Westcott Mason, of Camp Lejeune, N.C. She was preceded in death by her son, Charles T. Westcott Jr., who died June 25, 1999.
She is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Sarah, Katie, Laura, Rachel, Gretchen, Julia, Drew, Kerry, Charlie, Caroline, Madeline, Benjamin, Jason and Andy. She is the sister of Nancy Whorf Kelly, formerly of Provincetown, currently living in Sanford, Fla.; John Whorf, of Hingham; and Michael Whorf, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, at St. Mary of the Harbor Church, 517 Commercial St., Provincetown. Burial of her ashes will follow on the church grounds. There are no visiting hours. If desired, memorial contributions in honor of Carol may be made to St. Mary of the Harbor or to the Alzheimer’s Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, 712 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown
